John Franzreb was born February 5, 1836, in Germany. John spent his boyhood in his native village and then sailed to American at an early age arriving at Castle Garden, now the Battery, in Manhattan. After finding employment and gaining enought expertise and capital he became the owner of an oyster house which he managed successfully prior to 1876. That year he purchased the Four Corners Hotel on Staten Island. He retired in 1880 but in the following year he bought the Silver Lake Hotel which he ran for close to a decade.

After selling the hotel and its property he entered the ice business. He continued with this occupation until the city of New York began negotiations for a city park site. The city purchased the property a year after his death. Mr. Franzreb was one of the pioneers of the artificial ice industry, having conceived and erected the Staten Island Hygeia Ice and Cold Storage Company of Stapleton, Staten Island.

He married Katherine Zahn, daughter of Jacob and Marcia Lange Zahn in November 1857. They were the parents of two sons and two daughters: Mary who married John Staudermann of New York, Emma who married Edward Merk and, after his death, Bruno Ludwig, John, 2nd, and Henry who died 12 Oct. 1918.

For three generations, the Franzreb family of Staten Island was associated with horses, but their ancestors started the family business in ice.
Leng and Davis Staten Island and Its People gives an account of the early Franzrebs. According to the authors, John Edward Franzreb immigrated to Manhattan from Germany in the mid-1800s, and in 1876, took over management of the Four Corners Hotel on Manor Road.

But after a year of retirement, in 1881, he bought the Silver Lake Hotel (where the reservoir is now located) in conjunction with an ice business from William Bradley of Silver Lake.
Franzreb closed the hotel and ran the ice business until the city bought the property for Silver Lake Park, a transaction completed a year after Franzrebs death in 1902.
His son, John Franzreb, was also in the ice business, and ran the Staten Island Hygeia Ice Company. Other members of the family were also involved with that company. After 25 years, he turned it over to his sons, John E. Sr., George and Reinhardt.
John E. Sr.s grandson, John E. III, said that the Hygeia ice house was on Clove Road, on the site occupied today by the lower Fountains apartment building. The business offices were in the familys house up the hill (adjacent to the now closed Clove Lake Stables).
The invention of refrigeration, and the widespread use of domestic and industrial refrigerators, changed the commercial ice business. The Franzrebs ice house burned down, as did many others.
