Franzreb of Sunnyside, the matriarch of Clove Lake Stables who taught thousands of young Staten Islanders to ride horses, died Sunday in St. Vincent's Medical Center, West Brighton. In the mid-1930s, Mrs. Franzreb and her husband, John, founded a riding academy in Sunnyside, in what was once called Clove Valley, near the vicinity of Victory Boulevard and Clove Road.
The horses from the Franzreb family's horse-drawn ice-delivery business were assimilated into the riding school after the advent of home refrigeration forced the closing of the ice business.
In the early 1940s, the couple moved the stables about a half-mile west on Clove Road, near the Bement Avenue-Bard Avenue fork. Their Clove Lake Stables, called the "Incubator of Horsemanship," became one of the most successful riding academies in the East. Mrs. Franzreb touched an untold number of young lives through riding.
"She was a near and dear person to many Staten Islanders," said her son, John E. Franzreb III. "So many people have come back to tell me about their experiences. She introduced them to the sport of horses. Without that, it would have never occurred to them." Many of Mrs. Franzreb's former students grew into adult pleasure riders, competitors and horse-sports professionals.
Clove Lake Stables closed in the late 1980s. Mrs. Franzreb stopped riding about the same time.Over the years, she and her students competed in numerous national equestrian competitions, including the prestigious National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden in the 1940s."They won a tremendous amount of championships and ribbons," her son said.
During her distinguished career, Mrs. Franzreb served as a past director of the Professional Horsemen's Association of America and was awarded one of the group's highest honors for 50 years of service.
Born Adele L. Twyford in Port Richmond, she was the daughter of "Big Bill" Twyford, who served as an alderman for Staten Island before Richmond County joined New York City in 1898.
Mr. Twyford owned the former Twyford Florist, also Port Richmond, and co-founded the fabled Twyford-Muche Baseball League with his friend, Fred Muche, who once owned a West Brighton sporting goods store.
Mrs. Franzreb not only had long and storied roots on Staten Island, but in America as well. Her ancestors arrived in the New World on the Mayflower. They were related to William Bradford, the first governor of Plymouth Colony, which was founded in 1620.
She attended PS 20 in Port Richmond and graduated from Port Richmond High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from the former Notre Dame College, Grymes Hill, now St. John's University."She was a real organizer," said Doris Rendt of Great Kills, a longtime friend and former classmate. "When her husband went off to war, she ran the stables and handled everything else, in addition to raising her four children. She was a great lady and a dear friend."
After marrying in 1941, Mrs. Franzreb left Port Richmond and spent the rest of her life in Sunnyside, first in a house on the grounds of the stables in Clove Valley and later moving up Clove Road into a house on the grounds of the second stable site.
After Clove Lake Stables closed to make way for development, she moved into the Fountains condominiums, immediately across Clove Road from the former riding school. Although Mrs. Franzreb's life turned seriously to horses after meeting her future husband, equestrianism was always in her blood.
Her great aunt rode in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show when the troupe performed in Mariners Harbor in the 1880s. The same aunt also was taught to shoot by the legendary Annie Oakley, according to family lore.
Through the decades, thousands of students participated in riding programs at Clove Lake Stables, which provided pickup service at their schools, often with Mrs. Franzreb behind the wheel of the bus.
Many of her young charges remember her fondness for riding through Clove Lakes Park, singing with her students.
"She would put kids at ease by singing with them as they rode," her son said. "It was a fun time and that was part of her demeanor, fun."
Although Mrs. Franzreb had experiences with hundreds of horses during her lifetime, her favorite was a chestnut saddlebred named Lady Luck.
Lady Luck was a gift from her husband in the late 1930s. The horse lived more than four decades, nearly double the normal life span.
"The horse had a fantastic longevity," said her son. "In her later life, Lady Luck was not used, just revered."
In addition to her role in the Professional Horsemen's Association of America, in which she also served as treasurer, Mrs. Franzreb was a member of the Staten Island Horsemen's Association and a lifetime member of the American Horse Shows Association.
She served on the organizing committee of the Miss Staten Island Pageant and was a past president of the Augustinian Academy Mothers Guild and the Mothers' Club at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, Tompkinsville, where she was a parishioner.
During World War II, Mrs. Franzreb co-founded the Richmond County Calvacade, a social group for women riders, which met in Clove Lakes Park. The group began with just three women and grew to around 40 before disbanding in the mid-1950s.
"They developed these beautiful scarlet-red coats that they would wear in parades and at social functions," said another son, William.
Mrs. Franzreb's husband, John, died in 1966.
In addition to her sons, John and William, survivors include her two daughters, Grace Hall and Merri Musso; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
